Pat Collins workshops on the Central Coast

Our friends at the Pulse Co-op are organising another series of Home Healing Workshops by Pat Collins, due to begin next month.

FIG members have been emailed the information however it's open to anyone on the Central Coast who is keen to participate and learn much about healing and making their own remedies, skin care, creams, lotions and potions!

Please contact Pulse direct for enquiries and bookings: <pulsecoop @ gmail.com> , removing the spaces and the < & >. Here are the details:

"Beginning on the second Saturday in February Pat Collins will begin her home healing courses again at Jilliby. Each course is very extensive, comprehensive and full of Pat's helpful healing tips. An extra course is now available also, course number 11 which is on depression and anxiety. Pat has added this course to her program as she is finding it more and more common in her practice.

Pat Collins runs a very successful natural health center in Muswellbrook called the Total Health and Education Centre (THE Centre) and you can learn about her at www.patcollins.com.au

Pat has been teaching courses in TAFE, community colleges, throughout various communities and at her practice for over 20 years, has written 6 books and appears on the local radio as well as working 4 days a week in her very busy practice. She is a qualified Herbalist, Iridologist, Hypnotherapist & Reflexologist and still frequently attends conferences and seminars to keep up to date with the ever changing world of health.

The courses she held during 2012 were very successful and inspiring for all of the students who are now practicing home healing in their own homes. It gives one a great feeling to know that on many occasions, you can take the health and well-being of your loved ones into your own hands and send them along the way mended and whole again. It also gives much more awareness of the world around us and nature and how it can all work together once we educate ourselves. These courses also focus on preventative measures to help you set up a life of health and abundance. It is no less than life changing to say the least - you will never look at a weed the same again and will always be able to think more about the choices you make for your health and well-being  It is very powerful to know these simple truths.

If you or any of your family or friends are interested in Pat's course for 2013 please email me ASAP with your details. I will be doing all correspondence for these courses over email and will be finalising the role in the next week.

Each course will be held on the second Saturday of each month from 10am till 4pm at Jilliby Hall (except for the December class which will be on the first Saturday) & we all bring a pot luck lunch to share. The cost of the course will be $70 for the day and will include all products to take home as well as rent for the hall. Please know that you leave the day with much more product than what you pay for; Pat is very generous with her goodies - some months we made up to 10 products each such as fresh herbal teas, capsules, creams and ointments, just to name a few. Not only would we come home with a bag of wonderful freshly made goodies, we knew from our teachings that day just how to use them in our lives. Each month we would come back with stories of success of the products we made and tried on our families!

The first half of the day is spent being taught by Pat on the chosen topic of the month and the second half is spent making all the products we leave with. You therefore learn all you need to about the product you are using and how to make it yourself - groups have been formed where the class has gotten together on their own to make products for themselves as we have been given the know-how to do this after learning from Pat.

Payment will be required in advance to secure your spot. I will confirm this with those who are interested and each month it will be required that you pay in advance for the next month. This payment system was used last year and attributed to the year being so successful and a full class most months.

Please contact me directly asap if you would like to be placed on the roll. It is expected that each student will attend each month, but if you are unable to make all months, please let me know.

Food MythBusters video-- Do we really need industrial agriculture to feed the world?

We've just seen this new video on the issues of industrial agriculture. It's about seven minutes long and we encourage you all to watch it.

Here at FIG we're all about supporting the small, mixed farms and the families who farm the land, and believe they CAN feed the world...

Enjoy, and please share...

Sharing recipes...

During the week, the following was posted on the FIG Facebook page (go here to see it).

"One of the best things about wandering around FIG on a Monday or Tuesday afternoon is listening to the recipes and tips being shared amongst Figgies as they pick up their fruit and veggies.

Yesterday I was drooling over a friends 'Baked FIG veggies' creation - FIG potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, parsnips and beetroot with FIG garlic, fresh rosemary from the garden and marinated feta - yummo!
"

Sounds totally scrumptious!

So... what's your favourite FIG inspired recipe??

Mangrove Mountain Fair

FIG had a stand at the great little country fair at Mangrove Mountain yesterday. It's the first time we have been there and the turn out was fantastic, with a very good atmosphere.

Our mission was of course to talk to prospective FIG members but also to try chat to farmers and encourage more of them to come on board and grow for us, organically of course! We made a few connections so time will tell if the day was successful in that regard.

It certainly helps - and puts weight behind such a quest - to have been in operation for about two-and-three-quarter years and to have settled into a good rhythm of operation, and it helps no end to have farmer Michael Champion singing our praises to anyone who will listen, from local farmers and families to the NSW Farmers Association, who were next door to us at the fair. We must be doing something right - or a whole lot of things, actually!

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers on the day - you know who you are! - and Permaculture Central Coast for the loan of their marquee; to Dawn for her wonderful little posies of colourful flowers and herbs which are delightful. Thanks, also, to visiting FIG members who came over for a chat as well.

I'm hoping David may have photographs of the day; we had a pile of organic magazines and material to hand out (thanks, Michael) and to read, hung photo boards, signs and mini posters and also the following, which prompted quite a few comments - and laughs!

See you at the co-op...

Local happenings...

Here's a reminder of some great local events and health happenings on the Central Coast:

First of all, there will be a screening this Monday in Cinema 5 at Cinema Paradiso, Ettalong Beach of the film "EATING". This is the latest movie being shown in the Diseaseproof Your Life Movie seminar series: 29th August 7.30 until 9.30pm.

EATING: "join over 40 million people throughout the world who have watched this award-winning film. It covers a lot of ground very comprehensively - and all within 88 short minutes.

The Eating DVD is used in wellness clinics throughout the world to motivate people to change their diets and restore their health. Topics include:

- Why we have an epidemic of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other diseases.
- Why following federal nutrition guidelines will kill you.
- Why the government promotes foods that shorten lives.
- Why almost everyone has cancer by the time they're fifty - and don't even know it.
- Why doctors treat symptoms of disease, not causes.
- Why our most deadly diseases were rare before 1900.
- Why most school-age children already have heart disease."

A few October updates...

When you become a FIG member you receive weekly email updates of what’s happening, produce tips, etc, however this week we simply had too much to share! Once again there is information and also some events happening which Figgies like to know about, so here are a few of them, in this, the National Organic Week! (Updated Friday evening 8th Oct)

The co-op is not in the business of telling anyone what and how to eat!
However, we do encourage the eating of more vegetables and fruit, grown, of course, minus the chemicals! Whether you’re a vegan, raw foodie, you eat meat twice a day or twice a year, or prefer cooked food and only eat an occasional salad, the consensus amongst many in the health profession seems to be that the more fresh plant food we can consume, the better. We’re finding all sorts of information, all the time, and even found this: a short clip of former USA President, Bill Clinton, whom has experienced heart problems in the past with by-pass surgery highly reported in the media world-wide and more to insert some stents, and who has now been following the advice of two medical doctors, Esselstyn and Ornish, and eating a diet rich in plant-based foods.

We encourage you to make your own enquiries about your health and to learn what’s best for YOU and your family.

One FIG member is a Naturopath and she has given us the following information on detoxing for Spring...

A Spring clean!
I wonder if you would like to inform your people, through your newsletter, of the importance of this spring season to start cooking up their organic garlic and lemons... The formula is 30 cloves of organic garlic and 5 whole lemons: chop as small as possible or use a food processor, then add 1 litre water; bring to the boil and turn off. You may eat as is or strain off. 30 Mls for adults to consume daily and 10-20 mls for children. Keep in the fridge once cold, and take a dose each day anytime. In 3 weeks, one''s blood and arteries may be unblocked and as well the lungs being clearer of mucus as the liver also gets assistance of blood purifying from the sourness combined with the pungent, to clean us out. Repeat this process again in Autumn.

Three weeks is usually enough however, if you wish to do again, break a week after the 3 weeks and cook up again another batch for another 3 weeks, especially if you are suffering from high cholesterol.. This detox does not interfere with any medication, nor does it leave any bad odour or garlic smell as the boiling process with the lemons skins and all make it taste rather nice, with no after taste or smell of the garlic on the breath.

From your friendly local naturopath, Catherine.

(Note: FIG has ordered extra garlic and lemons for this coming Monday if you want to try this, and will do so in future weeks on request).

Junkbusters!
The marketing of unhealthy food to children has been recognised as a probable causal factor in childhood overweight and obesity. With one in four Australian children and adolescents either overweight or obese it is time to take action. Cancer Council NSW has launched Junkbusters, a one stop shop to help parents navigate the complex food marketing regulations. Junkbusters helps concerned people take action against inappropriate food marketing targeting children. The Junkbusters website will collect information reflecting public concern about food marketing to children, and record outcomes from formal complaint processes. This information will provide an independent indicator of the effectiveness of current regulations and identify if there's a need for national statutory regulation to reduce children's exposure to unhealthy food marketing. Be a Junkbuster!

Aussie kids aren't guinea pigs, label GM Now
Independent testing conducted by Greenpeace has discovered that some of Australia's leading brands of infant formula are contaminated with traces of genetically modified (GM) organisms. These GM organisms have never been proven safe for people to eat; and have certainly never been proven safe for babies to eat. Because these products carry no GM label, Australian parents currently have no idea they are feeding GM to their babies. Please help stop this from happening. Demand that all GM foods be labelled. Visit http://www.greenpeace.org.au/gmbaby and take action now!

Vegie growers concerned about imports:
See here for full article: http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-national/vegie-growers-worried-about-imports-20100929-15wmm.html Not to mention the questionable growing methods in some other countries or the spraying of produce upon arrival in Australia!

Organic farmers try to get a bite of the apple

“Rural Australia is really hurting. And the cuts to services really hurt. Health services are cut, banks close, schools close, farmers suicide. Areas have 21% unemployment. We are bleeding people in the country… Yet organic farming is a sunrise and success story going against the trend,” said Andre Leu, a tropical fruit farmer from northern Queensland, chair of the Organic Federation of Australia (OFA) and vice-president of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM). Read the full article here, http://blogs.crikey.com.au/rooted/2010/08/27/organic-farmers-try-to-get-a-bite-of-the-apple/  which also includes: “Moving from conventional to organic farming takes a few years, but results in more drought hardy soil with better water absorption, thanks to increased humus content. Carmel Righetti, a Victorian sheep farmer who supplies organic wool to luxury fashion labels Metalicus and Gorman, says “conventional farmers need to be freed from the burden and oppression of big multinationals”, who often control supply, debt and pesticides used by conventional farmers. Australia has more hectares of land used for organic production than any other nation in the world. Global organic sales are worth $50 billion annually, and the beggest markets are the US and Europe, although the Asian market is growing 15-20% annually.

Last but not least, a few words from Dr Max Gerson: ‎"Our modern food, the 'normal' food people eat is bottled, poisoned, canned, color added, powdered, frozen, dipped in acids, sprayed--no longer normal. We no longer have living, normal food, our food and drink is a mass of dead, poisoned material, and one cannot cure very sick people by adding poisons to their systems.”

And he said that a few decades ago! Time to revert to a natural way of eating, methinks...

Thanks to our members who have submitted some of the information and links for this post today… See you at the co-op!

Co-op Events

We are very pleased to announce some events coming up in the near future for co-op members, starting with:

The first KIWI FRUIT WINE making session this Saturday, in a joint venture between FIG and the Firescreek Winery. This is the first of an ongoing process spanning at least eighteen months, so let us know if you would like to be part of the small team making occasional trips to the winery for the wine making process. RSVP a.s.a.p. to fig.centralcoast@gmail.com.

Next, a COMMUNITY HARVEST & PRUNING DAY will be held at the end of this month. Bring your families and a picnic, and enjoy a day amongst the vines at the Kiwi Fruit Farm.

When: 11am until 3pm, Saturday 31st July

Where: Ourimbah. Full details provided upon your RSVP.

What to bring: Picnic, seats or picnic rug, hats, gloves, water to drink. Whilst we will be picking the remaining fruit, the main focus will be on pruning, and a list of equipment to bring, if you have it, will be provided. Bring a bucket to take home some kiwi fruit!

RSVP: yes please! Send an email to fig.centralcoast@gmail.com.

Families who have attended this activity before have enjoyed it immensely. This will probably be our last community day at the vines this year, so please make time to come along if you're able, even for part of the day...

AQUACULTURE TOUR
2pm, Saturday 7th August
Please email your expression of interest for the tour of a local working Aquaculture system, both large and small, on the northern end of the Coast. There is a maximum limit on attendance at this event so we suggest our members respond quickly.

FARM TOUR
Details will be announced shortly for an early Spring Farm Tour for co-op members. Bring your families and a picnic lunch, meet the farmers and learn about how some of our food is grown. Enjoy a day in the fresh air up in the Mangrove Mountain region of the Central Coast...

That's all for today...

FIG updates 9th April, 2010

Thanks for all the favourable comments about the produce. They have been passed on to our farmers who are quite appreciative, actually.

We have added a section to the FIG blog, for those who have requested it, which you'll be able to click on after 8pm Sunday night to see what produce is expected for the FIG boxes the following day. You'll find this information in the sidebar to the left, under the title "What's in the FIG box this week?". As mentioned previously, there can be last minute changes such as the eggplants this week which many of us were eagerly anticipating and which did not arrive, sending the FIG folk into a whirl of what to substitute! Edited 10.4.10

We were delighted to have some fresh produce from local gardens again this week and some chilli and herbs set out to be taken for free. A big thanks to our members for providing these. Next Monday we will have Ruby Grapefruit - if you tend to drop by late and would like us to put some aside for you, please email FIG at fig.centralcoast @ gmail.com (minus the spaces).

Did anyone try that beautiful Ourimbah honey this week? Very delish! And how more local could it be?

Tonight we have been invited to a talk with the Central Coast Plant Society, given by Dr Tim Entwisle of the University of Sydney and the Botanic Gardens Trust on The Seasons of our Region. This is of relevance to the gardeners and food growers amongst us, and will be held at 8pm this evening at the Narara Research Station.

On Tuesday 20th April, Permaculture Central Coast will be holding their next Information Evening at Tuggerah with April Sampson-Kelly of Permaculture Visions as guest speaker. If you are keen on growing your own food and wish to live a more sustaining life, have been wanting to complete a Permaculture Design Course but cannot get to one, then April conducts courses by distance education which may suit.

One of our members is building a rammed earth and strawbale home at Ourimbah and is going to be conducting some working bees. If you are interested in helping out and even learning from this experience in view to building your own home, please contact FIG and will we pass your details on.

Don't forget the management meeting next Monday, due to start as soon as we're packed up and swept up after co-op has finished for the day. The end of the financial year is looming which represents the end of an official FIG year too, with only two meetings left to go after this one. We think this is a good time to reassess our method of operation and whether we bring in any changes from July. If you are a member and would like to be included in on the discussion, please come along.

See you at the co-op...

07 March 2010

Where we're at, March 2010

Well, well, it's been quite a year. So much to catch up on and to tell - but we'll stick to the basics!

FIG has just celebrated it's FIRST BIRTHDAY, Woohoo!!
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
We began operating on 23rd February, 2009, and the first co-op day was held at the Cedar Valley Centre Hall at Jilliby. This was a bit too far for our delivery guy and many of our local families to drive however a venue was urgently needed and we're very grateful the hall was available. We were able to quickly organise another venue at Ourimbah, where we remain today, and began operating in our current format, dealing directly with local organic farmers and suppliers, at the beginning of June, 2009.

It's been an exciting time in which we've been involved with the Central Coast branch of the Sydney Food Fairness Alliance and the subseqent Food Forum in Wyong; were announced as the Community Environment Network's Environment Group of the Month; witnessed our local avocado supplier newly being certified for mushrooms as well (and they're beautiful!); commenced bulk ordering of organic meats and bulk fruit as an additional service; welcomed Antje turning up weekly with her yummy home made, hand-kneaded, bread; organised a community harvest event on a local kiwi fruit farm and subsequently included the produce in the weekly FIG boxes and a jam making session; held some workshops and information sessions, and steadily increased our numbers. The feedback from our members after using the produce from the FIG boxes in meals for their families has been positive and wonderful to hear. Some of our aims were to give local farmers a fair price for their produce and to also make it affordable to local families and we think we're doing that. Thank you, everyone, for your comments.

Special thanks must go to Michael Champion, local organic farmer, for not only supporting FIG but co-ordinating several farming families here on the Central Coast and Kirkconnell (west of Sydney and just within a radius of 160 kms from here) to bring a larger range of local, seasonal, fresh produce to us weekly.

Thanks also to the key management group for getting us this far so successfully and with very few glitches; to Andrew who continues to advise on all matters co-op, and to Lani who hosted us all in her loungeroom when we were getting together and chatting about how we could go about all this. And where would we be without our members who support the co-op week in, week out, supply us with their surplus herbs and eggs and vegetables, and regular volunteers who help set up, pack up, bag vegies, wipe benches, vacuum the floor, etc?!

THANK YOU TO EACH & EVERY ONE OF YOU!

Now to some details for anyone new reading this or wanting a refresher: FIG operates weekly from 3-5.30pm each Monday - except for when Monday is a public holiday and we move to Tuesday. Address, phone number and email address are to be found in the bar on the right.

Our first priority is to order from what is available locally and then, depending on the weather, rabbits, varieties and quantities planted and so forth, we have to supplement our order with produce from an organic supplier in Sydney. As our members also like to have carrots, potatoes and some fruits such as bananas in their boxes, we generally order these weekly from Sydney as well. One day more of these items may be grown organically on the coast, in which case most of our FIG boxes would be sourced locally.

More information to come shortly.

Bye for now from all of us at FIG!

Where we're at...

Originally posted 2nd September 2008

Quite a few hours and a few meetings later we are now at the stage where we are facing one of the biggest hurdles...supply. There are relatively few organic farms on the coast that can supply us with what we are looking for.

One idea that we are currently exploring is growing our own....enough to support all members of FIG and their families with supplementation from local farms.

This can be done with a combination of FIG members utililising their own backyards to grow food as well as utilising privately owned land that has been generously offered to us for our own use.

There have been a few local landowners who have generously offered FIG the use of their properties for growing etc. To reduce the risk for FIG members and private landowners we are considering growing our basic intensive annuals on privately owned properties and are in the process of finding publicly owned/funded land to develop with longer term plants and perrenials or a permaculture based system.

Welcome to our new blogspot FIG-Food Integrity Group.

The idea of FIG came together when a small group of people realised there was a larger demand within the local community for fresh, affordable organic/biodynamic produce. This created a start for a few informal meetings and a basic survey to gather an idea of exactly what the majority of people were looking for.

It has now evolved into a more formal group of 7 core ‘members’ who have put together the following charter and outline of a proposed collective community buying/growing group.

As we grow in awareness of the fragility of the current system of food production and food distribution and its consequential damage to the environment our health and community, FIG aims to promote/support/grow food that decreases the stress on the environment and ultimately the stress on our health and community through education and the provision of fresh/dried organic, local, homegrown/community/locally grown affordable food.
